Portland Shanghai Tunnels
A color photograph of a lower basement to an abandoned building in Portland, Oregon that was exposed as it was demolished revealing two sealed doorways to a 19th century tunnel system. Many believe The " Shanghai Tunnels" connected a series of bars along The Willamette for the purpose of human trafficking. Recent research, however, seems to indicate they were primarily used by Chinese syndicates to both smuggle opium and to protect themselves from ethnic persecution. Photo taken in September 2019
