Young girl and two children trying to escape from rats
Two children and a young girl trying to escape from rats which were plaguing the town of Hamelin in Lower Saxony, Germany, in 1284. The event inspired the legend of the Pied Piper who removed the rats by playing his musical instrument but when the townsfolk refused to pay him, he lured away most of their children. From " The Pied Piper of Hamelin" by Robert Browning, illustrated by Kate Greenaway, published by George Routledge & Sons, London, Glasgow, Manchester and New York in 1888
