Traditional Japanese Woodblock print of Love and the Moon
" Utagawa Toyokuni (1769, Edo - February 24, 1825, Edo) was born as the son of a puppet maker. He learned printmaking as a student of Toyoharu. At the beginning of his career he concentrated on bijin-ga - images of beautiful women. Toyokunis success and fame came when he started making yakusha-e or actor portraits and actor scenes. This image dated 1848 is Act1, scene 4 of Yumemono gatari and was published by Minatoya Kohe. It shows a moonlit scene with Fireflys in the sky. The lover in the boat and two figures rowing towards it, one man holds up his hand and forms part of my own private collection of original woodblock prints. This image dated 1848 is Act1, scene 4 of Yumemono gatari and was published by Minatoya Kohe.
