Traditional Japanese Woodblock print of Pearl Divers
A fantastic provocative print by Utagawa Toyokuni (1769, Edo - February 24, 1825, Edo) also often referred to as Toyokuni I, to distinguish him from the members of his school was a great master of ukiyo-e, This image shows two pearl divers, ( Ama divers ) one standing on a rock wringing out her clothes with a knife in her mouth and the other holds a large oyster shell ready to be openend. the large rock has a flock of Starlings swarming around whist on the horizon the sails of Junks can be seen. This print forms part of my personal collection
