The Philadelphia Stock Exchange
Engraving by William Henry Bartlett shows pedestrian and horsecart traffic on the street in front of the Merchants Exchange Building, home of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, at Third and Walnut Streets, Philadelphia, 1839. The neo-classical building was designed by William Strickland, built primarily of Pennsylvania marble, and completed in 1834. Since 1952 the building houses the offices of the Independence National Historical Park. The smaller Greek Revival building on the left is the First bank of the United States (1791 - 1811) which was later Stephen Girards Bank (which built the Merchants Exchange building) and is now a museum.
