The word “desert”  brings to mind a sea of shifting sand, which cover only about 10 percent of the world’s deserts. Found on every continent and covering about one-fifth of Earth’s land area, other desert landscapes are mountainous with dry expanses of rock, sand, or salt flats

Petrified Forest, Deadvlei, Namibia, Africa

Remaining skeletons of trees, which are believed to have died 600a??700 years ago, are now black because the intense sun has scorched them. Though not petrified, the wood does not decompose because it is so dry. This creates a particularly fascinating and surrealistic landscape, that appears in innumerable pictures and has been used as a setting for films and videos

The magnificent Licanbur Volcano in the Atacama Desert of Chile Featured Amazing Deserts Print

The magnificent Licanbur Volcano in the Atacama Desert of Chile

Valley of the Moon, Chile - 26 May 2018 The spectacular El Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) is located in the Atacama Desert of Chile, the driest place on Earth. Many places here have seen no rain for centuries. It also offers stunning views of the nearby Licancabur Volcano, seen here at dusk. But I have folded the image to accentuate its bold forms, making the vivid volcano appear to float in space
