Born in London, Bert worked his way up from a lab assistant to a photographer rising to prominence through his distinctive photo journalistic style. Known for his work published in the Picture Post magazine between 1941 and 1957 Bert had a great talent for getting on with the people he had to photograph and his images of life in England during and after World War II are among the great documents of the twentieth century and classics of British photojournalism. There's no doubt he was gifted war photographer, however his peacetime images of people going about their daily business are more characteristic of his work.

After Picture Post folded in 1957 Bert went on to be a successful advertising photographer, often using ordinary people as models.
“The ideal picture tells something of the essence of life” wrote Hardy.
