Glenfinnan
4th June 1955: The monument at Glenfinnan, at the head of Loch Shiel, Invernesshire, which marks the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie (1720 - 1788) raised his familys standard (his grandfather was the deposed James II) at a gathering of Jacobite troops on August 19th 1745. The army he had organised for an attempt to reclaim the British throne was unsuccessful and the rebellion, known as the 45 Uprising, ended at Culloden where 1, 200 Scots died. Bonnie Prince Charlie went into hiding until Flora MacDonald helped him to escape to the continent where he spent the rest of his life.
