America's Cup is one of the oldest and best-known trophies in international sailing yacht competition, predating the modern Olympic Games by 45 years. The trophy's roots date back to when a syndicate of businessmen from New York sailed the schooner America across the Atlantic Ocean for the World's Fair in England. The cup was originally awarded in 1851 by the Royal Yacht Squadron for a race around the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom, which was won by the schooner America and subsequently became known as the America's Cup.
