Holyrood Palace
1924: The Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence of the Queen in Scotland. The Palace stands at the end of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh and is a popular tourist attraction. The Abbey of Holy Rood ( rood meaning cross) was founded in 1128 by King David I and the Palace was built next to the ruins by James IV in 1498. The building was extensively reconstructed in 1671 on the orders of Charles II; attacked in 1544 by the Earl of Hereford, it was also damaged by fire in 1650.
