The creation of steam locomotives began with the development of the steam engine dating back into the late 17th century. They are vehicles that run on rails or tracks and are powered by steam engines. Historically they were used for moving freight and other materials, as well as passengers. A popular method of transportation for a large part of the 19th into the 20th century, they were eventually replaced with more modern methods of transportation.
