Incense is burned throughout the A-Ma Temple, to pay homage to the Queen of Heaven. The temple, situated on the southwest tip of the Macau Peninsula, is one of the oldest and most famous temples in Macau. Built in 1488, the temple is dedicated to the goddess of seafarers and fishermen Matsu.The name Macau is thought to be derived from the temple. The temple was well described in ancient Chinese texts, as well as prostrated in paintings. It is also one of the first scenes photographed in China.The original temple on this site stood perhaps when the Portugese arrived. A-Ma became A-Ma Gao (Bay of A-Ma) and actually consists of several shrines for both A-Ma (or commonly known as Tin Hau) and to Kun Iam (Guan Yin known as the Chinese Bodhisattva of Compassion. The name Guanyin is short for Guanshi yin which means Observing the Sounds (or Cries) of the World. A-Ma, a young beautiful women whose presenece on a Guangzhou-bound ship savedit from disaster while all the other ships in the fleet whose rich owners refused to give her a passage, were destroyed in a storm. The temple is one of the designated sites of the Historic Centre of Macau enlisted on the the UNESCO World Heritage List (2005)
