(Original Caption) 5/19/1948-Newark, New Jersey- Pickets from various building trades unions are shown as they picketed the $12, 000, 000 Ivy Hill housing project in Newark. The picketing is the result of the firing of 300 American Federation of Labor building workers on Monday by the contractor. Former Seabee Arthur H. Padula refused to pay $3.15 an hour for Union bricklayers; $2.90 for carpenters and $2.10 for laborers. He is now filling the vacant jobs with non-union workers on an open shop basis. He says he expects production with non-union help to be not less than 25 per cent greater than under a union shop.
