(Original Caption). The Law Has the Last Word. Lapeer, Michigan: Kicking and screaming, 60 year old Mrs. Elizabeth Stevens, mother of nine children, is dragged from her Lapeer farm home by a sheriff's deputy and women assistants. Eviction of Mrs. Stevens climaxed in a free-for-all that resulted in injury to eight persons and jailing of two of Mrs. Steven's sons. The Stevens farm was sold by auction in 1948 after Mrs. Stevens refused to pay assessments to cover debts of a bankrupt Mutual Fire Insurance Co. She has steadfastly refused to vacate the property. Several neighboring farmers are in similar straits. Governor Williams of Michigan has asked that further action on such evictions be postponed pending decision on a petition for a grand jury probe of the whole case.
