(Original Caption) 2/21/1957-Montgomery, AL: This is how hundreds of blacks live in the south in extreme poverty. Mrs. Isiah Moreland is shown with five of her grandchildren. They have no water, sewerage, garbage disposal and the only heat is from a fireplace. The children haul wood or they buy it for 25 cents a bucket. This slum section is called Carters Quarters because it is owned by Judge Eugene Carter, District Court Judge of Montgomery who gets $20-$30 a month for these shacks The kids are Sarah, 5, Danny, 12 James, 11, Willie, 7, and Glory Jean, 4. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm).
