The promise of a fresh start in life has lured thousands of families to the area around Anuradhapura, site of Sri Lanka's ancient capital. Wars and diseases in recent centuries have resulted in movement of the capital and departure of the population. The old capital was left to be swallowed by the jungle. In a major development project, the island's major river, the Mahaweli, has been harnesses to provide hydroelectric power for industry and irrigation of thousands of acres of land being reclaimed from the jungle by settlers.
