Framed Print of Dalai Lama Being Taught by Lord Chamberlain of Tibet
(Original Caption). This rare snapshot of the Dalai Lama (left), ruler of the mountain Theocracy of Tibet, has been received at Yale University by Wesley E. Needham, the newly appointed adviser on Tibetan Literature at the Yale Library. One of the few photos of the Dalai to come out of Asia in recent years, the snapshot made in March, 1951, shows the young Dalai, then 16, being shown a gold reliquary containing the ashes of two disciples of Gautama Buddha who died around 500 B.C. Holding the urn is Chi-Khyap Khem-Po, Lord Chamberlain of Tibet, and one of the Dalai's Chief Advisers. The picture was made in the monastery of Dungkar, in southern Tibet, at the time the Dalai had fled the Tibetan capital pending negotiations with the invading Chinese Communist armies. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass).
