(Original Caption). Traditionally, the Kentucky Derby is a race of excitement, high drama and surprises. Many truly great horses have won the derby; many great ones have lost it to rank outsiders. The present derby record of 2 minutes, 1 and 2/5 seconds for the mile-and-one-quarter was set by Whirlaway, left, of Calumet Farms, in 1941. He went on to win racing's triple crown. Another Calumet colorbearer, Citation (second from left) took the derby in 1948 on the way to his triple crown, and later became the first horse to earn over $1, 000, 000. Alfred Vanderbilt's Native Dancer, unbeaten before the derby and after it, lost the big race to lightly-regarded Dark Star (third from left) in 1953. Similarly the great Nashua lost to Swaps (second from right) in 1955. Both Native Dancer and Nashua won the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, the other gems in the triple crown, but they just missed o. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame.
