Framed Print of Famous Baseball Legend Explaining His Experience with Bat in Hand
(Original Caption). Dan Casey, the Mighty Casey of Diamond Legend, explains to Rogers Hornsby, (L), former Big League star, now coach for the Baltimore Orioles, and to Babe Herman, of Jersey City, how he struck out on that fateful day, more than 50 years ago, providing the incident for the famous poem. Casey explained that his forte was pitching and he was notoriously weak in batting. He was the only one in the ballpark who wasn't surprised when he struck out with two out, men on second and third, in the ninth inning of that historic game in the Old Philadelphia Ball Park, on August 21, 1887. Casey played with the Philadelphia team. Although his fame spread throughout the land because of the poem, Casey got a job as conductor of a street car in Binghamton, New York, and held it for forty years, living in obscurity.
