Governor Ross Barnett (top, 7/3/1962 photo from files) appeared before a reluctant state college board on September 17, 1962, to ask that it defy a U.S. Supreme Court edict and halt admission of the first African American student to the University of Mississippi. Barnett already has called on board members to resign if they are unwilling to join him in the ?righteous cause? of maintaining segregation at ?Ole Miss.? The 12-member authority, which must determine whether to obey a court order to admit James H. Meredith, 29-year-old Air Force veteran (shown here in photo placed in files 9/17/1962). Meredith was initially barred from entering the school on September 20th, but on October 1, 1962 he became the first black student at the University of Mississippi. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass).
