(Original Caption). Chicago: End Of An Old Battle? A CIO union was awarded a quarter of a million dollars damages Feb. 23 in a case that grew out of the famed World War II incident (above) in which soldiers carried board chairman Sewell Avery out of his Montgomery Ward and Co. office. The mail order house was seized when it refused to abide by a government order to bargain with the union--the United Mail Order, Wholesale and Retail Employees Union. The firm later sued the union's newspaper for a million dollars, charging it had been libeled. That case was thrown out of court in 1948. The union later filed a counter suit. It charged the mail order house with winning an injunction ordering the paper not to print a word on the battle. It said the injunction had cut its membership from four thousand to seventy and had deprived it of dues. The union won the suit, and $250, 000. Incident a. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame.
