(Original Caption). Exciting Day in the First Grade. Williamsport, Pennsylvania: Children at the Sheridan School get a treat as Howard Pop Miller, the janitor, shows them how to furnace works. Miller, whose display would warm the professional heart of any science teacher, was delighted when a few eager first graders asked to watch him fire the huge school furnace, and amazed them with the complete lecture. On display were samples of bituminous coal and anthracite, a lump of coal with the imprint of a fern leaf, a jar of water and a steaming tea kettle to show steam, a miniature toy steam engine, and samples of wood, copper, aluminum, steel and iron. Miller knows most of the youngsters at the elementary school and likes to call them by name. His theory, in fixing their skates, sleds, bicycles, etc. is that if he helps them, they in turn will be more tolerant of the thing.
