Framed Print of Lithograph of Betsy Ross Sewing the Flag
(Original Caption). Betsy Ross Making the Flag. The First Stars and Stripes. High in popularity among American legends is the story of how Betsy Ross made the first Stars and Stripes in her little house at 239 Arch Street, Philadelphia, now preserved as an historical landmark and visited by tourists from all sections of America. This is the flag that on June 14, 1777, was adopted by the American Congress in these words: Resolved that the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation. The painting shows the interior of the Betsy Ross House, where a committee, composed of George Washington, Robert Morris, and Colonel George Ross, is said to have called with a design for the flag, which was altered according to the suggestion of Betsy Ross.
