Detroit, Michigan: Tall oaks from little acorns grow, but never did such a giant oak from such a little acorn as the oak that is today the mighty Ford automobile empire. Spread before you here at a glance is the fruit of one man's life work -- another striking bit of testimony of the truism that America is the land of opportunity. At left, the one page payroll of the Ford Motor Company for the week ending July 18, 1903. There were 18 employees then and the total weekly payroll was $93.00. The first car built by the infant company was sold on July 23, 1903. At right, a small section of the file room containing the employee records of today. Here are contained the personnel records of 129, 172 workers of the Ford Motor Company, which now has a daily payroll of approximately $1, 500, 000. The girl is Jane Lehr, one of the 129.
