(Original Caption). The first draft in the peace time history of the United States took place on October 29, 1940, as Uncle Sam prepared himself for aggression from overseas. With airplanes and munitions, plants working at 100% capacity, turned out orders for this country and for England. The man power of the nation was called upon by Congress for one year of military training. All those between the ages of 21 and 38 years of age registered. Then in a solemn ceremony in a Washington auditorium, Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson drew the first capsule containing the registration number 158. Every male who registered was assigned a draft number and was given training as his turn came. Due allowances were made for disabilities and dependants. Here we see Lt. Col. Charles R. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame.
