Framed Print of Roy Heckler Feeding Flea Circus on His Arm
(Original Caption). Roy Heckler is the literally flea-bitten proprietor of the establishment - he feeds the tiny actors by the simple method of putting them on his arm and letting them help themselves. His father started the flea circus in 1900, and Roy took over in 1925. He used to import the fleas from Italy, but when the war cut off his supply, he started raising his own. He trains only female fleas since they are twice the size as males, but likes to give them names Napoleon, Benny or Rudolph. He trains them not to jump, but to crawl or walk by placing them in a long, horizontal glass tube. They bump their heads every time they jump, and soon they get out of the habit.
