(Original Caption). Russians discover connecting tunnel. East Berlin, Germany: The Soviet army authorities charged yesterday that the Americans are tapping Soviet military telephone lines through a tunnel which has been seized by Soviet troops in East Berlin. The Russians, casting aside their usual reticence toward western correspondents, invited them to visit the tunnel. This disclosed that the tunnel led directly toward a United States installation 550 yards away on the other side of the border. In photo left, a Russian signal officer is shown explaining to newsmen about a knot of lead covered cables which had been laid bare on the side of a road almost a stones throw from the American sector. On the other side of the road was the entrance to the tunnel. In photo center, an East German people's policeman points to a card in the tunnel which says in German and Russian You a.
