(Original Caption). A technician inspects the in operation space heating system at the Hanford Nuclear Project where warmth is produced by atomic energy. Water from the Columbia River is pumped through Hanford reactors used in producing plutonium. In cooling these reactors, the water absorbs immense amounts of heat and picks up slight amounts of radioactivity. Water leaving the reactor is both hod and radioactive. Part of it passes through horizontal cylinders in this outdoor heat exchanger. In so doing, it warms an ethylene glycol solution passing through internal tubes. The solution transmits the heat to air conditioning units in various Hanford buildings. The reactor cooling water is held until its radioactivity level has decreased to a point where it can safely be discharged into the river. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass).
