Framed Print of Tom Dunbar, Simon Lake, William Beebe, and Frank Crilly Posing
(Original Caption). Commercial Type Submarine Tested. The diminutive submarine which inventor Simon Lake hopes will enable man to salvage treasure from the sea was given a test December 20, at City Island, New York, before scientists, engineers, and government officials. The craft, dubbed Explorer, only 22 feet long, and 6 feet wide, with space for four men, was taken down by William Beebe, the naturalist, and Frank Crilly, diver, for a test. The submarine has an emergency motor but ordinarily is towed by a cable. Its bottom is fitted with wheels and the sides are armored to permit 600 foot descent. It has equipment for pumping air under pressure, electricity, and telephone. When the submarine was submerged in 35 feet of water, a wooden buoy floated to the surface indicating the divers were using the trap door which permits entrance and exit under sea.
