New York: Former Nixon Cabinet Officers, Attorney General John Mitchell, and Commerce Secretary Maurice Stans, go on trial February 19, on charges of conspiracy, obstructing justice, and perjury. John W. Dean III, former White House Counsel and President Nixon's chief Watergate accuser, is expected to testify against the pair. The indictment alleges the defendants attempted to get favorable treatment for millionaire financier Robert Vesce by the Securities and Exchange Commission in exchange for a secret $200, 000 cash contribution to the Nixon re-election campaign. If convicted, Mitchell and Stans could be sentenced to maximum prison terms of five years on each charge--one count of conspiracy, three of obstructing justice, and six counts of perjury.
