Framed Print of Women Receiving Gun Crew Training
(Original Caption). Major General Charles T. Harris, Jr. is shown talking to the gun crew of the 90mm Anti-Aircraft gun just before they fired a practice round. Left to right: General Harris; Mary Owens, of Rising Sun, Maryland; and Thelma Vestal, of Kenton, Ohio. These girls and 1, 000 others are doing the work of the men at the Proving Grounds and doing it well. the Ordnance Department thought of a new idea and put it to work. It was to take 100 women, train them in the art of firing guns, driving trucks and tanks, and in general, do all the work formerly done by men. It succeeded and now there are 1, 000 women doing their part in the war effort as you can see by this gun crew.
