A seaside coastal resort located in the South of England
Officially the sunniest town in Britain, Bognor Regis is a seaside coastal resort located within West Sussex in the South of England and one of the oldest recorded Saxon place names in Sussex. In a document of 680AD it is referred to as Bucgan or a meaning Bucge's (a female Saxon name) shore, or landing place. In more recent times it was known as just ''Bognor'' and up until the 18th century, was just a fishing village and was also used by smugglers. The first tourists arrived in the 18th century, and King George V convalesced from surgery here in the late-1920s, which is how the town gained its royal Regis suffix. Ever since the Butlin’s holiday camp opened in 1960 Bognor Regis has been an archetype for England’s staid seaside resorts with an unending string of shingle beaches trimmed by a promenade.
