Engraved Skull
circa 1955: An engraved metal skull which once belonged to Mary, Queen of Scots bearing inscriptions relating to death. The skull unhinges to expose a watch. Mary Stuart, Mary Queen of Scots (1542 - 1587), the only daughter of James V and his second wife, Mary of Guise. Maryfs reign was beset by plots and religious struggles. Lord Darnley, Marys second husband, murdered her private secretary David Rizzio and was then strangled himself by the Queenfs favourite James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell. Bothwell and Mary were married in a Protestant ceremony which angered Catholic Scottish noblemen. The two sides clashed in battle but Maryfs troops were defeated and she gave herself up, abdicating in favour of her son, James VI. She escaped from prison a month later and crossed the Solway Forth seeking refuge at the court of her cousin Queen Elizabeth I. Instead of receiving help she was imprisoned in England but only brought to trial after a plot to assassinate Elizabeth, involving Maryfs page Anthony Babington, was discovered. She was executed in February 1587. (Photo by Evans/Three Lions/Getty Images)
