Princes St Gardens

1911: Princes Street, Edinburgh, with Forsyths Department store (completed 1910) (right), Edinburgh Castle (background), the Scott Monument (centre) and the roof of Waverley Station (left). Princes Street, named after George IIIs sons, was designed by James Craig (c. 1740 - 95) who built hotels and shops on the north side of the street and left the south side open to slope down to public gardens. Craigs most significant achievement was his winning design for the New Town which was submitted in 1767. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
