Brazilian Sugar Factory

Sugar cane is processed at a factory in Brazil, circa 1700. An illustration from Les Indes Orientales et Occidentales, et Autres Lieux by Romeyn de Hooghe. After the canes (1) are cut (2), they are transported by oxcart (3) to the mill for grinding (4). They are then crushed by a watermill (5) before being dried in an oven (6), crushed again by ox-power (7), transported across the mountains (8), refined (9) and cooked in vats (10).
