Gladstones Audience
6th December 1879: Women in the Ladies Gallery at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange listening to one of William Gladstones famous speeches during his first Midlothian Campaign. He was critical of Disraelis aggressive imperial policies and tried to appeal to the morality of the British electorate. Gladstone (1809 - 1898) was successful in the election and returned to power with a Liberal government in 1880. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
