A Scene From Longfellows Evangeline
Engraving illustrates a scene from Henry Wadsworth Longfellows Evangeline in which the two separated lovers, Evangeline and Gabriel, reunite at his deathbed at the sickhouse in which she serves as a nurse in Philadelphia, drawn by Frank Dicksee, 1882. The two Acadians (French settlers) were expelled from the Canadian Maritime Provinces after the Seven Years War. The poem has become a central text of Acadian and Cajun culture.
