Army Exercises
20th August 1955: Soldiers of the Black Watch going through their exercises at the Black Watch Depot, Queens Barracks, Perth. The Black Watch, Am Freiceadan Dubh in Gaelic, was founded in 1739 and a cairn marks the spot between the Tay Bridge and Aberfeldy where the regiment was first mustered in 1740. It was the first regiment to introduce Highland dress as a uniform and wear kilts in the traditional dark tartan. They also earned the right to wear red hackles in their regimental caps for courageous conduct in Flanders in 1795.
