Chimney Pots
25th June 1955: A view of chimney pots on the roof tops of houses in Dundee. Dundee, situated on the banks of the dSilvery Tayf, is linked to Fife and the south of Scotland by a road bridge, opened in 1966, and a rail bridge finished in 1897 to replace the one which collapsed during a storm in 1879. Dundee is most famous for its jute industry which began as a by-product of whaling in the eighteenth century when it was discovered that the whale oil mixed with raw jute enabled workers to spin the fibre into fabric. The textile industry flourished in Dundee and at its peak employed 50, 000 people. The area around the city is used for fruit growing which is the foundation for a thriving jam industry founded in 1797 by Mrs Keiller, who began making the famous Dundee marmalade. Captain Scottfs ship dDiscoveryf was built in the local shipyards on Tayside for its journey to the Antarctic in 1901 and has recently been restored for the city to display in dry dock as a tourist attraction.
