The future Duke of Clarence on the Royal Navy training ship HMS Britannia. Prince Albert Victor Christian Edward of Wales, later Duke of Clarence and Avondale, was the eldest son of the then Prince of Wales, Albert Edward (who became King Edward VII). Prince Eddy, as he was usually known, would have become King on the death of his father. However, he died of influenza in 1892, aged 28.
