Hall of San Bento train station in Porto, Portugal
San Bento train station was built in the early ninth century on the ruins of the former convent of San Bento Ave Maria and still retains that old melancholy air that characterizes the city of Oporto.
Although its facade and entrance is stately, the real gem is inside: a decorated hall with more than 20, 000 tiles in the history of Portugal is portrayed.
Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon, and one of the major urban areas in Southwestern Europe. Located along the Douro river estuary in Northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres, and its historical core was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. The western part of its urban area extends to the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. Its settlement dates back many centuries, when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire
