Melaka was once an important trade centre during the heyday of the Malacca Sultanate in the 15th century and later, when it was under control of the Dutch East India Company (1641-1825). It has lost most of this function in the present and is now a major tourist attraction. In 2008 it was listed, together with George Town of Penang, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its long history
