Valley of the Buddhas | Bamiyan
The Buddha statues of Bamiyan were built in the 5th and 6th century A.D. They were blown up by the Taliban regime in 2001, on the pretext that these statues were un-Islamic.The Buddhas of Bamiyan were the largest examples of standing Buddha carvings in the world, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The Chinese Buddhist pilgrim Xuanzang passed through the area around 630 AD and described Bamiyan as a flourishing Buddhist center with more than ten monasteries and more than a thousand monks and the figurines decorated with gold and fine jewels
