Framed Print of SAOEleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul

SAOEleymaniye Mosque is an Ottoman imperial mosque located on the Third Hill of Istanbul, Turkey. It is the largest mosque in the city, and one of the best-known sights of Istanbul.Built by order of Sultan Suleiman I, nicknamed the Magnificent, was built by the imperial architect Mimar Sinan. Construction work began in 1550 on the site that had occupied the palace Eski Saray being finalized seven years later, in 1557.Sinan conceived the architectural design of the building as opposed to the Byzantine Hagia Sophia. Hagia Sofia converted into a mosque during the reign of Mehmed II served as a model to many Ottoman mosques in Istanbul. However Sinan had a more symmetrical, rational and simple conception preceding Ottoman architects.Like other imperial mosques in Istanbul, the mosque is preceded by a monumental courtyard (avlu) on the west side. The yard is surrounded by a colonnade or peristyle with columns of marble, granite and porphyry. Located at the four corners of the courtyard are the four minarets, one constructs allowed the Sultan as the number of princes and princesses could have only two minarets or minarets.
