Framed Print of Humour Brobdignag bonnet Cruikshank 19th century cartoon
This is a cartoon etching by the well-known Victorian social caricaturist / cartoonist George Cruikshank (1792 - 1878), dated May 20th, 1828. (1828 is in the reign of William IV, but most of Cruikshanks artistic work was in the long reign of Queen Victoria.). Title: Brobdignag bonnet Description: Seven people beside the wearer walk under the flat brim of a huge ribbon-trimmed hat. Cruikshank was often amused by the size of ladies hats, and here he makes reference to (while mis-spelling). Jonathan Swifts Land of Giants in (Gullivers Travels). A related quote from the book, regarding this spelling: (...as to the people of Lilliput, Brobdingrag (for so the word should have been spelt, and not erroneously Brobdingnag), and Laputa, I have never yet heard of any Yahoo so presumptuous as to dispute their being...).
