Framed Print of Engraving by Theodor de Bry After A Weroans or Great Lord of Virginia by John White
(Original Caption). The Chieftans of Virginia wear their hair long, tied in a knot close to the ears. Their hair is out from the top of the head down to the neck in the form of a coxcomb. One long bird's feather is stuck into the crest on their foreheads and a short one abobe each ear... Their bodies are painted... Their chests and stomachs are covered with sports where they have been bled when they were sick... They carry a quiver made of rushes and in one hand hold a bow, in the other an arrow. On this page are reproduced ten 16th century engravings of the first pictures of America. To the comparatively few Europeans who saw them, these were the first visual impressions of life in the immense wilderness across the sea. The engravings are by Theodore De Bry, Flemish artist and publisher, made after the paintings of two men- John White, artist and governor of Sir Walter Raleigh.
