(Original Caption). Edwards AFB, CA: World's top jet ace dies in crash. Captain Joesph McConnell Jr. the world's top jet ace, credited with downing 16 Red MIGs in Korea, was killed newar Edwards AFB, August 25th, when he crashed while testing a modified version of the Sabre jet. The 32-year-old pilot, shown above after one of his 106 Korean missions, radioed shortly before the crash that he had lost control of his plane. He was ordered to bail out. McConnell's body was found in his ejection seat about half a mile from the wreckage of the souped-up Sabre. His paracute was unopened, and the Air Force speculated that he was flying so low when he bailed out that the chute did not have time to open.
