Julian Bond speaks at a press conference at the Hotel Drake in New York City. In 1965 Bond was denied a seat in the Georgia State Legislature, although he was duly elected, because of his objection to the United States participation in the Vietnam War. Voters in his district re-elected him twice, but he was denied his seat until the Supreme Court ruled his exclusion unconstitutional in December, 1966. He was sworn into office January 9, 1967 and served in the Georgia House of Representatives until 1975 and in the Georgia Senate from 1975 until 1987.
