Bonn, West Germany: Sitting pensively behind a battery of microphones, West German chancellor Konrad Adenauer records a speech here to be delivered to the German people by radio later in the day. The 83 year old chancellor was scheduled to leave later for Lake Como, Italy for a month's vacation. Adenauer said he intends to continue leadership of free Germany if elected to the figurehead post of president. Adenauer told the nation barely 24 hours after his decision to retire from the chancellorship that the powers of the president are much greater than one usually believes. He said he has decided to seek election to the presidency to ensure the continuity of our policies for many years.
