A general view of the city of Dundee, showing blocks of high rise flats under construction. Dundee is most famous for its jute industry which began as a by-product of 18th-century whaling when it was discovered that mixing whale oil with raw jute enabled workers to spin the fibre into fabric. The textile industry flourished in Dundee and at its peak employed 50, 000 people. The area around the city is used for fruit growing, which is the foundation for a thriving jam industry founded by Mrs Keiller, who began making the famous Dundee marmalade in 1797. Captain Scott?s ship ?Discovery? was built in the local shipyards on Tayside for its journey to the Antarctic in 1901 and has recently been restored for the city to display in dry dock as a tourist attraction.
